2017...

That was the year I abandoned an opportunity for consistent full time work and made the move to Hollywood.

As an actor/filmmaker, I did all the "right" things that experts and coaches told me to do when I moved here. Fancy resumes, new expensive headshots, wrote scripts, volunteered, and went to numerous networking events--

None of it worked.

I remember one night, sleeping in my confined shared room, contemplating if I was a failure. Wondering if I was just another hopeful idiot waiting to be chewed up and spit out by the city.

It wasn't until the American Film Market in November 2018, that the trajectory of my career changed. At the event, I met a mentor who is a working filmmaker/distributer who told me how the business really works.

After that meeting, I started to learn all sides of the filmmaking process and learned what is actually valuable to decision makers. I still have so much room to grow, but I'm finally making progress based on what I learned.

Everyone in Hollywood will tell you...

"It's about who you know..."

That's half the the truth. In order to make real connections, you have to bring value at the very beginning in order to forge connections.

And handing over a headshot and buying a $5 coffee for a casting agent isn't bringing value.
